I laughed when I read that you loved this show, because my partner, Renee, does too. This is particularly amusing because she is not only a butch, but usually a fan of movies/shows featuring car races, gub fights, and international crime rings. Needless to say, we have watched many episodes!

I don’t think “the kiss” plot fell short. Nor do I think the reporter was meant to represent lesbians. First of all, is the character that kissed Pamela a lesbian? Is she bi? She used her “play dates” to get through the time her husband was gone. She doesn’t want to cheat on her husband, so she uses another female because no batteries are required. Lots of people are reacting to the kiss as being gratuitous, but I think the reporter (I can’t remember her name) was looking for a no strings attached sexual relationship while maintaining a friendship (turn it on when our husbands are away - turn it off when they arrive back on post). She chose Pamela because she is physically attractive and their interactions showed her that she could trust her not to blab about their “play dates” afterward. She already knew a lot about Pamela from listening to her on the radio, then she confirmed what she felt by interacting with her as she interviewed her for the magazine. For all we know she could have been planning the whole thing before she showed up at the radio station.
